In the future we will post articles here concerning such organizational activities as forming an association, obtaining non-profit and tax-exempt status and arranging for bulk-mailing.  Watch for further developments.

It is time to update your unit's information with us.  We often ask ourselves "...who ya gonna call..."  Unless you send us this information we cannot answer that question.  Please retrieve a questionnaire by clicking on one of the buttons below.  Fill it out and send it to our Secretary Christie Brennan

What should your unit do about Sales tax?  Susie McCrea developed some information and it has recently been updated to include important changes that will benefit your organization.  You should read it, and make your own decision about whether your unit's project will require sales tax.  Click here to read it.  Check back here for more regarding Sales Tax in Virginia including links to some VA Dept. of Taxation articles.

As for filing IRS form 990-N (e-Postcard), the IRS wants you file this even if you are not a 501c(3) certified non-profit and you have less than $5000 in gross revenues. It is required. That is what the IRS said when I called. As a non-IRS certified, non-profit organization, the IRS is looking at your gross receipts as a possible tax source when the gross receipts do exceed $5000. Should you exceed this magic number, the IRS will give you 90 days after the end of your bountiful fiscal year to file Form 1023 for 501c(3) certification. Nevertheless, as long as your gross receipts stay under $5000 and you are not a 501c(3), you pay no taxes.

Comparing the instructions for the 990-N form to those for the 990-EZ form, which I filed last year, you have it easy. For reference I copied the IRS information on what is needed for the 990-N form. See the attachment. Sorry, I didn't link it but you can find more instructions and the form at IRS.GOV. For questions call IRS's number 1-877-829-5500.
