Chesterfield

Chesterfield County Master Gardeners continue to stay very busy and respond to our clients needs. We have completed 195 clients in the Grass Roots program and 52 clients for the Gardening for Chesterfield Residents. These numbers are down from last year and we suspect the economy has been the main factor.

The demo garden out front of the Extension Office has been a great education tool and fall crops will be planted for further education. Home gardening has been the big topic for our free seminars, as well as the other regular seminars on lawns, etc. Another topic gaining much popularity is sharing your yard; living with wildlife. Another new topic added to our free seminars is gardening for the older citizens, such as, “Raking without Aching”. We continue to accept walk-in and answer phones daily.

Program: The Home Turf Team (Keep it Simple; Keep it Green) of Fairfax joined with Loudoun Turf Busters at a field day for our respective turf nutrient management programs.  Dr. Mike Goatley, Jr. (Turfgrass Specialist, VaTech) discussed turf grass selection and maintenance. Adria Bordas (Ext Agt, Fairfax) discussed weeds as indicators of turf problems and Debbie Dillion (Ext Agt, Loudoun) discussed the all important topic of soil testing and understanding the results. After the presentations, we met at the Loudon MG demonstration garden where we had an opportunity to discuss turf plot samples, learn how to calibrate a spreader, and witnessed a core aerator demonstration.  Unfortunately weather moved in and we were unable to practice measuring and soil sampling; however, we were given a homework assignment to figure out how to measure various homeowner lots that we would probably come into contact with in the near future.

Other: A debriefing on Master Gardener College-2009 and suggestions for the college in 2010 was attended by those who attended the college.  We also received e-mail comments by those who were unable to attend the briefing.  All of this information will be forwarded to the Master

Gardener College Advisory Team for their consideration.  The two-hour debriefing primarily concerned management and administrative aspects of the college experience although we briefly touched on the academic program too.

We’re getting ready for our Fall Plant Sale/Clinic on Oct 17th. The fall does not bring in as many clients. Has anyone else had the same experience?

Starting August 31 the Help Desk will be on hiatus. It has been really slow this year.

The Greater Tomato Contest will be ending on August 31. This contest has been very successful. We will be announcing the winners soon!

Our School Programs in five of Lynchburg’s City’s Schools have settled down to us just watering and weeding through the summer.  Our School programs will pick back up in late September.  The Master Gardeners are keeping busy this summer at several community centers throughout the city.

We continue to staff the phone in the office to assist our Extension Agent Don Davis with horticulture questions.  We also staff a booth at the Community Center every Saturday morning as well as Wednesday mornings.
