Message from Dean Quisenberry

Dear Supporters and Friends:

We are excited to share that Virginia Tech has been nationally recognized for its outstanding achievements in agricultural and natural resources research. We are now ranked sixth by the National Science Foundation for research expenditures related to agriculture and natural resources, up from the number 10 position we held last year. We are proud of the excellence of our programs and are making a difference in the lives of Virginians.

Unfortunately, the recent successes in external and private funding support cannot offset the additional impending state budget reductions we are facing. These cuts will endanger the continued maintenance of our core programs. Virginia Cooperative Extension and Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station (the 229 Agency) already received a five-percent budget reduction for Extension and research this year, which has eliminated all budget flexibility.

To help stave off further reductions of our programs, we would like to ask for your support in contacting state legislators on our behalf (Colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Natural Resources, and Veterinary Medicine). We have attached a document entitled “Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station and Virginia Cooperative Extension (Agency 229) – Working to the Benefit of Virginians.” In this document, we outline selected program impacts that you may find helpful as a reference in contacting legislators.

We sincerely appreciate your continued efforts on our behalf and thank you in advance for your ongoing support.

Sincerely,

Sharron S. Quisenberry
